Serving up slices in Banff for over 30 years.
So, you want to hear our story? You got it. Aardvark Pizza & Sub has been a Banff staple since the early ‘90s, serving up late-night eats, breakfast delivery, and some of the best pizza in town. But before the pizza, there was a bit of a leap of faith.
Back in 1985, Dave and Maria Smalley met while working at the Banff Springs Hotel. Originally from Ontario, they were drawn to Banff for the skiing, the mountains, and the tight-knit community. Like so many before them, what was meant to be a temporary move quickly became permanent. They knew they wanted to build a life here, and when they heard a local pizza spot was for sale, they took a leap. Young and ambitious, they went for it.
Three decades later, Aardvark has become more than just a pizza joint. It is a place that has fueled adventure, cured late-night cravings, and been part of the Banff experience for countless locals and visitors. The menu has evolved, adding subs, wings, burritos, donairs, and breakfast, but the heart of Aardvark remains the same. Good food, good people, and a commitment to the community.
Along the way, they raised three kids, all of whom have spent time behind the counter or in the kitchen at Aardvark. The business did not just shape their careers. It helped shape their family, providing a foundation for a life spent in the mountains and a deep connection to the Banff community.
From supporting local non-profits to employing those who come to Banff to work and explore, Aardvark has been about more than just food. It has been about building something lasting. And after all these years, Dave and Maria are still here, doing what they love in the place they love.
